History
Ironically, Lowe’s Motor Speedway opened its gates the same year, 1960, as Atlanta Motor Speedway, now a sister track owned by Speedway Motorsports, Inc. Not only was the track unique in its design, the track’s founders, Bruton Smith and Curtis Turner, made the announcement that the first event would be 600 miles in length.
The costs to build the track, however, were seriously underestimated and eventually entered into reorganization under the bankruptcy regulations applicable in the 1960s. Smith was able to reclaim ownership from a local Charlotte businessman in the mid-1970s and what fans see today has been a continual effort to keep the track up to current standards.
The Speedway is host to the non-points, all-out dash for cash known as The NASCAR All-Star Challenge. The All-Star Challenge is an all-star race that grows in attendance each year. The following weekend, the Cup Series drivers compete in the Coca-Cola 600. This event takes the green flag in daylight, and ends under the lights over four hours later
